Zhengfan Yang was born in 1985, China. After graduated from law school, he co-founded Burn The Film in 2010 with Shengze Zhu. His debut feature DISTANT (2013) premiered at Festival del Film Locarno and screened internationally at the Vancouver IFF , Warsaw FF, Nantes 3 Continents, among others. His second feature WHERE ARE YOU GOING (2016) premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and received the Jury Award at the China Independent Film Festival. Yang has also served as the producer and cinematographer for two documentaries directed by Zhu: OUT OF FOCUS (2014, Cinéma du Réel) and ANOTHER YEAR (2016, Visions du Réel). Yang is currently developing a fiction film, THE STRANGER, which is the last part of his THE OUTSIDER trilogy, and received the Script & Project Development Support from the Hubert Bals Fund in 2017.
Initially a photographer, Shengze Zhu co-founded Burn The Film in 2010 with Zhengfan Yang, and has served as producer and cinematographer for Yang's films, including DISTANT (2013, Festival del Film Locarno) and WHERE ARE YOU GOING (2016, International Film Festival Rotterdam). OUT OF FOCUS (2014) is her directorial debut, which premiered at the Cinéma du Réel International Documentary Film Festival at Centre Pompidou, France. Her second feature documentary ANOTHER YEAR (2016) premiered at the Visions du Réel International Film Festival in Switzerland and received the Sesterce d’or - Best Film of the International Competition; it also received the Grand Prize at the RIDM Montreal International Documentary Festival, and the Critic's Award at the Olhar de Cinema - Curitiba International Film Festival. ANOTHER YEAR was honored as "Top 10 Films of the Year" by 24 Images Magazine in Canada. Zhu is currently working on two projects: Yang's latest fiction THE STRANGER (Hubert Bals Fund, 2017) and her third documentary LIKE A RIVER RUNS.
